Home of the infamous British intelligence and security organisation, GCHQ, Cheltenham resident Alfonso Muchacho fashions himself under the epithet of "world's most dangerous DJ". Whether under the watchful gaze of the UK government or not, Muchacho's work has afforded him considerable public attention as he now presents his "Neptune Skies" EP to Suffused Music.
A history of playing underground house parties across his UK homeland, John McDermott has built a solid foundation for his Alfonso Muchacho production pseudonym to flourish in the modern global dance scene. A regular monthly podcast provides an insight into the deep progressive sounds that form the basis of his own production work and labels such as Electronic Tree, Clinique and Visceral are testament to his music-making prowess.
Returning to Suffused Music after a trio of remixes in 2014, Alfonso Muchacho's "Neptune Skies" continue to provide a landscape for the British producer's talent. Comprised of a quartet of tracks, the opener, "Change Everything" provides a strong bass anchor from which rhythm and melody then flow against a shimmering set of delayed keys and thickly layered pads. The resultant effect is a smooth work that builds gradually across eight-minutes in impressive fashion.
"Haunted Heart" provides an up-tempo moment as kick-snare combination drive the rhythm section relentlessly forwards with accompanied hi-hats and filtered bass. Delayed plucks and underlying chords meet in dizzying delight in a work of energy.
The title track itself stands out with its nod to the trance sounds of yesteryear. A galloping bass line provides dynamism and strong kick combined with intermittent drum fills create welcome phrasing. A sublime set of melodic sequences and key changes add to the overall euphoric feel to provide a memorable track.
Final track, "Nothing Out Here" carries forward the atmospheric melodic themes of its predecessors with a set of melodies that twinkle across a strong, hypnotic set of beats based on house rhythms and ghost snares that provide swing and groove. Sustained lead lines and textured pads provide further deep space moments in an aptly titled track.
A quartet of tracks from Alfonso Muchacho has lit up the darkness under "Neptune Skies".
