Spacebeat - Winter Phase EP incl. Eze Ramirez, Jaap Ligthart, Kobb [SMD082]

For their 82nd release, Suffused Music bids a welcome return to Siberian resident, Spacebeat. After a pair of remixes for the label in 2013, the Russian now follows up his rework of Duke Maj in 2014 with a brand new original offering in the shape of the seasonally apposite, “Winter Phase” backed up with three band new remixes.

A deep, pulsating bass line characterises the original with menacing growl and strong groove. A low-slung beat provides the perfect accompaniment as hit-hats tick a tasty rhythmic path. Hypnotic arpeggios and luscious pads combine atop to provide a multi-faceted extravaganza that is full of emotion and tension.

First to take up the remix baton is Argentinean, Eze Ramirez. His work reaching celebrated imprints such as Balkan Connection and Clinique and supported by Pole Folder and fellow countryman Hernan Cattaneo, Ramirez makes his debut for Suffused Music with a cavernously deep remix and a bass line emanating from the earth’s core in siren call. A metronomic beat keeps “Winter Phase” on a relentless path as twisted vocal samples complete a sinister picture.

Jaap Ligthart is no stranger to the modern production scene having been heavily involved since early work for Polytechnic Recordings in 2008. Other work signed to Black Hole, Mistique Digital and Manual Music confirmed the Dutchman’s credentials as Ligthart now returns to Suffused Music after September 2014’s remix of Andrez. A bold interpretation sees a slight lightening of the mood with a wood-block arpeggio that sits elegantly against the darker bass elements. Stuttering and filtering as it reaches the mid point, a soft, swung beat adds a further sense of urgency to an intelligent rework.

Israeli born Kobb brings the package to a close. An artist with a high-calibre portfolio to his name includes releases on Lonya Koval’s Asymmetric as well as Plattenbank, Doppelgaenger and Mirabilis. Another Suffused Music debutant, Kobb’s “White Pill” remix is a sultry affair. Keeping the same rhythmic bass groove as Spacebeat’s original, a stronger set of chunky beats and 808 percussion infuse “Winter Phase” with tech house flavours that drive ever onwards, pausing for a pitched melodic interlude at the three-quarter mark before dropping back into its sumptuous rhythmic foundations.

A deep and delicious original has found Spacebeat’s “Winter Phase” in full alignment with support from a trio of impressive remixes.

Alejandro Manso - Memories of Space EP [SMD081]

Alejandro Manso hailing from Mexico City is one of the most promising newcomer artist of the progressive scene. With numerous releases behind his back on labels like Inmost Records, BCSA, Massive Harmony, PHW Elements - just to name a few - he dedicates 3 of his latest studio productions called 'Memories Of Space EP' to Suffused Music, as the label's 81th release.
'HD33564' sets the pace right on the start, with all the massive elements it builds fast and effectively, just find moments to chill a bit in the breakdown, then it continues to spread the energy of this tech based creation.
With 'Omen' probably we get the deepest moment in the package. The dreamy, layered sounds just give a subtle feel to the whole structure.
'XVII' is a nice crossover between the strict sound of 'HD33564' and the melodic touched 'Omen'. It has a cool tempo, while operating with some driving synth riffs. - Greyloop

Suffused - Backgrounds EP incl. Blue Haze, CJ Art, Josel, LoQuai, Silinder, Simuck [SMD080]

The Suffused Music imprint was launched in March of 2013. The label coined after the much loved Suffused production hit the ground running with the release of LoQuai's 'Proteus' which set the stage for great things to come. Over the next nine months the Lithuanian imprint carefully built a discography which included releases from Advent's Rising, Dr. Avalance and Josel who have all become regular contributors to the label. At year's end Suffused Music was considered by many to be one of the best new electronic music imprints. In addition to showcasing fresh and exciting talent the label featured present day stars like Michael & Levan and Stiven Rivic, Progress Inn and Ewan Rill. Fast forward two years and the label is now celebrating its two year anniversary. To commemorate the occasion the Lithuanian imprint takes a look back over some of Suffused's best ever projects which ultimately led to the creation of the label. Featured on the release are their remixes of Blue Haze, CJ Art and Josel along with the LoQuai, Silinder and Simuck interpretations of 'Differences', 'Year 2008' and 'Dark Soul'. It's been a remarkable two year journey for the label and all indications are this is just the beginning. - Release Promo

Alfonso Muchacho - Neptune Skies EP [SMD079]

Home of the infamous British intelligence and security organisation, GCHQ, Cheltenham resident Alfonso Muchacho fashions himself under the epithet of "world's most dangerous DJ". Whether under the watchful gaze of the UK government or not, Muchacho's work has afforded him considerable public attention as he now presents his "Neptune Skies" EP to Suffused Music.

A history of playing underground house parties across his UK homeland, John McDermott has built a solid foundation for his Alfonso Muchacho production pseudonym to flourish in the modern global dance scene. A regular monthly podcast provides an insight into the deep progressive sounds that form the basis of his own production work and labels such as Electronic Tree, Clinique and Visceral are testament to his music-making prowess.

Returning to Suffused Music after a trio of remixes in 2014, Alfonso Muchacho's "Neptune Skies" continue to provide a landscape for the British producer's talent. Comprised of a quartet of tracks, the opener, "Change Everything" provides a strong bass anchor from which rhythm and melody then flow against a shimmering set of delayed keys and thickly layered pads. The resultant effect is a smooth work that builds gradually across eight-minutes in impressive fashion.

"Haunted Heart" provides an up-tempo moment as kick-snare combination drive the rhythm section relentlessly forwards with accompanied hi-hats and filtered bass. Delayed plucks and underlying chords meet in dizzying delight in a work of energy.

The title track itself stands out with its nod to the trance sounds of yesteryear. A galloping bass line provides dynamism and strong kick combined with intermittent drum fills create welcome phrasing. A sublime set of melodic sequences and key changes add to the overall euphoric feel to provide a memorable track.

Final track, "Nothing Out Here" carries forward the atmospheric melodic themes of its predecessors with a set of melodies that twinkle across a strong, hypnotic set of beats based on house rhythms and ghost snares that provide swing and groove. Sustained lead lines and textured pads provide further deep space moments in an aptly titled track.

A quartet of tracks from Alfonso Muchacho has lit up the darkness under "Neptune Skies".
