Funkstate - Samsara EP [SMD214]

The 214th release on Suffused Music welcomes Funkstate to the label for their debut EP. Emilio Reyna and Hugo Ortiz hail from Argentina and make up the Funkstate production team. The duo made a huge impact on the progressive house underground in June of 2014 with their ‘Dada’ single on Luis Bondio’s Classound Recordings. A release on Luke Porter’s Temporum Music soon followed making them one of the scene’s freshest new names. Funkstate then disappeared in late 2015 and have not been heard from since. Now looking to reignite the momentum they had the duo returns with a highly anticipated EP for Suffused Music.

Spread across three tracks it’s ‘Khala’ which kicks the EP off on an electric note. Anchored by a rolling, well carved foundation the piece immediately commands a presence. As the groove begins to take shape a storyboard of psychedelic audio tantalizes the senses, all while building a lovely dramatic flow. Following an engaging first act, a spaced out yet emotive break culminates with an expressive array of sonic artefacts, as a rush of white noise pulls you back into the hypnotic groove.

The title track ‘Samsara’ follows with it’s alluring, soulful essence. Backed by thick slabs of rolling bass and vibrant percussive waves, it doesn't take long for you to get sucked into it’s rhythmic flow. Stellar synth work combined with trippy designs, indistinct vocals and rising atmospherics build momentum over the first two acts. A short but timely break strips down momentarily, building tension through frayed percussion before the beats eventually drop for that ultimate 3AM moment.

The release concludes with ‘Mountain Feeling’ which finds Funkstate exploring the deeper spectrum of progressive music. Affectionate vocals, meditative bass and a tight rhythmic core sit perfectly against a backdrop of buzzing atmosphere. Smooth chord changes fuel a free flowing emotive wave as the piece follows a mesmerizing path before reaching a purring finale. A reflective piece to close out a hugely successful comeback EP for Funkstate. A hugely talented duo who look to be in the spotlight as 2018 progresses.

Diego Ferran - Laguna EP [SMD213]

The latest release on Suffused Music finds Diego Ferran returning to the label for his second appearance. The Argentinean artist made his debut on the Lithuanian imprint in 2016 with a contribution to the label’s ‘Initializing Vol. 9’ collection. Subsequent releases on 3rd Avenue, Clubsonica Records and ICONYC have propelled Diego further into the progressive house spotlight, ultimately leading him back to Suffused Music for his debut EP entitled ‘Laguna’.

The deep, subterranean grooves of ‘Alliance’ lead the release off with a mysterious vibe. Meditative tones and airy hypnotics set the backdrop for an array of detailed percussion, coming in waves as wispy effects initiate the breakdown. The two minute interlude is a journey through bassy rumblings and sonic dust, eventually melting down to an esoteric mood as the thunderous groove returns for a powerful conclusion.

The title cut ‘Laguna’ ups the energy with a fuller, driving groove and firing percussion. Tripped out electronics bring an astral mood as wobbly arps evolve with each passing loop. A layer of melodic fuzz adds character, fading to prominence as the break commences. Esoteric in design, the centrepiece builds to a piercing, tension filled apex before waves of noise initiate a massive drop.

The torrid pace continues with the EP’s closer ‘Himalaya’. Chunky and powerful, the groove rolls with a discernible momentum as ghostly vocal pads open up the framework. Smooth chord changes bring a hint of emotion before a cross-cultural motif ultimately seals it’s brilliance during a moving second act. A stunning collection of music from Diego Ferran, an artist who is no doubt set for big things in 2018.

Pat Siaz - Multiverse EP incl. Dynacom, Paul Angelo & Don Argento [SMD212]

The 212th release on Suffused Music welcomes Pat Siaz to the label for his debut single. Panayiotis Patsias aka Pat Siaz hails from Cyprus and has been pushing his unique brand of melodic techno since 2014. A string of quality appearances on Sound Avenue, Juicebox Music and Bullfinch highlight his well kept discography. Now making his much anticipated Suffused Music debut Pat presents his new single 'Multiverse' alongside remixes from Dynacom and Paul Angelo & Don Argento.

Pat's sound stretches genres beautifully and 'Multiverse' is certainly a track that’s going to touch a wide spectrum of electronic music fans. From its deep, atmospheric beginnings comes waves of emotion and celestial harmonies. Charming vocal elements only add to its ghostly quality while a delicate yet powerful groove gets complemented with retro drum fills and a wonky lead synth. The piano led break is poignant, eventually melting down into synth euphoria and a wispy resonance, as the kick drops for a heavenly finale.

The first interpretation of 'Multiverse' is provided by Dynacom who is making his first appearance on the label. The Argentinean artist first appeared on the scene in February of 2016 with a contribution to Balkan Connection South America's 'Soldiers Vol. X'. Releases on BC2 and Soundteller followed shortly thereafter, establishing Dynacom as one of his country's top progressive house prospects. His 'Multiverse' interpretation adds nicely to his portfolio with a mix that brings a greater dance floor sensibility. It's tough groove comes off incredibly funky with thick slabs of bass powering the foundation. Quirky synths add further swing as a tension filled atmosphere descends over the framework. Stellar effects fire, building with feverous intensity, before stripping down into a cinematic break and special sonic moment.

The second and final interpretation of 'Multiverse' is provided by Paul Angelo & Don Argento who are also making their label debut. Well known for their work on Russia’s Clinique Recordings the Cyprus based duo has also appeared on Bonzai Progressive, Movement Recordings and Soundteller Records. Now making their much anticipated Suffused Music debut Paul and Don put a pure progressive twist on 'Multiverse'.  Dark and chuggy from the outset it’s rippling rhythms, phasing noise and ominous synths are a match made in sonic heaven. Sliced and diced, the vocal narrative adds an ethereal quality, which shifts the mix into more melodic territory, leading to a gorgeous break and ultimately setting up a stunning finale. A great remix from Paul and Don which rounds out three strong artist debuts on Suffused Music, making it another must have release from the Lithuanian imprint.
