Spacebeat - Winter Phase EP incl. Eze Ramirez, Jaap Ligthart, Kobb [SMD082]

For their 82nd release, Suffused Music bids a welcome return to Siberian resident, Spacebeat. After a pair of remixes for the label in 2013, the Russian now follows up his rework of Duke Maj in 2014 with a brand new original offering in the shape of the seasonally apposite, “Winter Phase” backed up with three band new remixes.

A deep, pulsating bass line characterises the original with menacing growl and strong groove. A low-slung beat provides the perfect accompaniment as hit-hats tick a tasty rhythmic path. Hypnotic arpeggios and luscious pads combine atop to provide a multi-faceted extravaganza that is full of emotion and tension.

First to take up the remix baton is Argentinean, Eze Ramirez. His work reaching celebrated imprints such as Balkan Connection and Clinique and supported by Pole Folder and fellow countryman Hernan Cattaneo, Ramirez makes his debut for Suffused Music with a cavernously deep remix and a bass line emanating from the earth’s core in siren call. A metronomic beat keeps “Winter Phase” on a relentless path as twisted vocal samples complete a sinister picture.

Jaap Ligthart is no stranger to the modern production scene having been heavily involved since early work for Polytechnic Recordings in 2008. Other work signed to Black Hole, Mistique Digital and Manual Music confirmed the Dutchman’s credentials as Ligthart now returns to Suffused Music after September 2014’s remix of Andrez. A bold interpretation sees a slight lightening of the mood with a wood-block arpeggio that sits elegantly against the darker bass elements. Stuttering and filtering as it reaches the mid point, a soft, swung beat adds a further sense of urgency to an intelligent rework.

Israeli born Kobb brings the package to a close. An artist with a high-calibre portfolio to his name includes releases on Lonya Koval’s Asymmetric as well as Plattenbank, Doppelgaenger and Mirabilis. Another Suffused Music debutant, Kobb’s “White Pill” remix is a sultry affair. Keeping the same rhythmic bass groove as Spacebeat’s original, a stronger set of chunky beats and 808 percussion infuse “Winter Phase” with tech house flavours that drive ever onwards, pausing for a pitched melodic interlude at the three-quarter mark before dropping back into its sumptuous rhythmic foundations.

A deep and delicious original has found Spacebeat’s “Winter Phase” in full alignment with support from a trio of impressive remixes.
