Calzedon Guy - Nothing EP incl. Sapienta, Secretvision, Modular Gate [SMD243]

An artist influenced by 1980s icons Depeche Mode and The Cure, Peter Szabo has carved out an impressive name for himself under a variety of production monikers. Represented on his Suffused Music debut by his Calzedon Guy alter-ego, the Hungarian artist has continued to advance the underground house scene since an October 2017 debut for Techno Vinyls Records. Going on to feature on the likes of Stellar Fountain, Astrowave and Clinique, “Nothing” is characterised by a rich rhythmic framework that lilts hypnotically across the near 9-minute piece. Delayed stabs enter the fray at the second movement as a spoken sample adds intrigue. Subtle pads provide texture and depth as the track progresses into the second half in a stripped back offering of impressive creativity.

An artist with a growing portfolio of music to his name, Sapienta has ridden the crest of a wave over the course of 2020. Making his debut for Star Drive Records in February, an array of original and remix production material has gone on to feature for Stellar Fountain, Consapevole Recordings and the ever-impressive Suprematic in December. Another Suffused Music debutant, the Sapienta remix bristles with energy as a heavy beat, chugging percussive groove and growling bassline lay the foundations for new melodies to evolve out of the original. Echoing Calzedon Guy’s motifs at the breakdown, a swathe of original production material is wrapped around “Nothing” to create a unique and impressive interpretation that makes its mark in the third movement with evocative counterpoint phrasing.

Another 2020 entrant into the underground dance scene, Secretvision has impressed with an eclectic release portfolio that include progressive house, trance and techno offerings since a March debut for Techno Vinyls Records. Going on to feature for the likes of Astrowave, Puzzle Music Underground and LW Recordings, the Hungarian artist who had imagined a life as an electronic music producer from childhood, provides another unique remix of “Nothing”. Paying close attention to the melodic themes of the original, a sparkling arpeggio adds another layer of intrigue which develops further at the breakdown in reduced tempo phrasing that builds in energy into the third movement. A powerful beat and rapid-fire hi-hat percussion provide a more than capable rhythmic framework to carry the melodic elements in an intelligent and dynamic interpretation.

An accomplished DJ with over 130 mixes to his name for Hungarian radio’s, TopFM, Modular Gate is a name that has had a connection with music from the start of the millennium. Reflecting his “massive but melodic” style, a 2014 debut for SoundKeeK Records began a career that has gone on to see music released on Hot Cue Music, Astrowave and Trippy Code. Appearing on Suffused Music for the first time, the Hungarian’s remix retains the original’s melodic theme at its core, while adding a powerful randomly triggered arpeggio that creates forward momentum. Additional chord structure and a ‘wall of sound’ breakdown hit hard before continuing into the third movement. A distinctive dub cadence adds to the Modular Gate remix of “Nothing” in an interpretation that pays tribute to his “maximalism” approach to music.

Rodskeez & Mars Monero - Ghost Limb / Rust in Oil, Bones in Soil EP [SMD241]

Returning after a brief hiatus, Suffused Music sees an Australian collaborative pairing making their debut on the label.

An artist with a considerable pedigree to his name, Rodskeez is a renowned name in the underground dance industry. A DJ from his early 20s, performances across his homeland have seen him perform at high-profile venues including headline slots at Chinese Laundry alongside the likes of Gui Boratto, Guy J and Henry Saiz. 

With over a decade’s experience and well over a century of production credits to his name, the Sydney based producer has found his music allied to some of the finest modern labels. A regular on the famous Australian, Vapour Recordings imprint, Mango Alley, Replug and Mesmeric have all played host to Rodskeez’s music, while 2011 saw a Sudbeat Music debut with “The Village EP” and remixes from label-owner, Hernan Cattaneo (alongside SoundExile) plus fellow countryman, Kasey Taylor.

Joining forces with fellow Sydney resident, Mars Monero, himself responsible for a clutch of releases on Sleazy Deep and Yes Yes Records, the duo saw a debut release on Mexican imprint, Sounds of Earth in September 2018 as part of the label’s 100th release, with “Chain and Anchor”. Now debuting on Suffused Music, “Ghost Limb” is a throbbing, soulful offering characterised by strong beat and rolling percussive groove that is enveloped in muted melodic phrasing and gently modulating pads. Evolving elegantly throughout with range of motifs and effects, a loquacious vocal line drenched in reverb and delay meanders impressively across proceedings with ease to add a strong dub vibe to the track.

Partner track, “Rust in Oil, Bones in Soil” continues the strong rhythmic cadence of its predecessor as an offbeat stab adds a touch of class to the head-shaking groove. A series of spot effects add depth and texture while a subtle vocal ping-pongs across the stereo spectrum in dizzying fashion. A dynamic bassline adds further to the dancefloor character in a track that is full of originality, technique and craftsmanship.

Kay-D - Voyagers EP [SMD240]

Continuing a rich seam of impressive releases across over six years, Suffused Music sees Kay-D return to the label with a new and original twin-track EP as “Voyagers” becomes the 240th release on the label.

From the ancient city of Ajka in the east of his homeland, Krisztian Kajdi has overseen a decade-long career in the underground dance music scene with his Kay-D production moniker. Borne of classical influences and three years spent at the conservatoire specialising in the trumpet, the Hungarian artist was inspired by the explosion in dance music across Europe in the early 1990s. Working initially with his renowned nephew, Karanyi, and building an understanding of modern synthesis and computer production techniques, Kay-D’s nascent career began with the “Mysteries” EP on CLS Music in March 2008.

Almost 500 production credits later and the Kay-D name has been writ large a cross a host of blue-chip imprints that include almost a double century for Michael & Levan and Stiven Rivic’s Mistique Music and three full-length albums. Furthermore, Kay-D has been a regular on the likes of Stellar Fountain, PHW Elements and Majestic Family Records, while co-hosting the monthly “Mindfields” show on Frisky Radio and performing live across his native Hungary and nearby Czech Republic.

A remix of T-Dallas in September 2013 opened Kay-D’s account for Suffused Music before September 2015’s “Eternal Sun” saw a standout original track and remixes from Reflection Soul and East Café. Now returning with a pair of new original tracks, the “Voyagers” EP opens with the driving rhythms and machine-gun fire bassline of “Artificial Consciousness”. Full of progressive hallmarks, luscious pads and sumptuous vocal waves wash over the seven-minute track in trademark fashion. Building relentlessly, a scintillating arpeggio sequence is added at the mid-point alongside an angular motif to create a multi-faceted track that is sure to find favour across European clubs.

The more laid-back title track is a pulsating affair that luxuriates in side-chained pads and emotive chord progressions. A cadenced bassline adds to the depth and head-shaking groove while Kay-D’s penchant for melodic phrasing can be heard throughout the eight-minute piece. Filmic vocal samples that link to the “Voyagers” title add further depth to a heavily stratified and carefully programmed work that reaches its melodic height at the stripped back breakdown. Opening up again into the second half, a hypnotising rhythmic foundation is the perfect vehicle to showcase Kay-D’s impressive production credentials.

Returning to Suffused Music, Kay-D opens up a new pathway to success with his “Voyagers”.

DP-6 - Sangria EP incl. Nicholas Van Orton [SMD239]

Comprising the combined Russian forces of Alexi Filin and Vadim Indigo, DP-6 have been at the vanguard of the underground house scene for two decades. Regulars on Suffused Music, it is an honour to welcome them back to the label with a brand-new track in "Sangria" and a world-class remix from an Argentinean icon.

With almost 500 production credits to their name across a plethora of blue-chip labels dating back to mid-2005, DP-6 have seen no let-up in their ability to craft high quality underground dance music. Inspiring fans across their Russian homeland with spell-binding DJ sets to captivated audiences, the duo have used the opportunity to play out an array of their own unique production material. As such, Clinique, Superordinate Music and Naked Lunch have all played host to the DP-6 name with a further 300 credits featuring on their own DP-6 Records. January 2016's "Eclipse" saw a debut on Suffused Music, while the twin-track "Synesthesia" in May that year went on to see a number of rereleases with remixes from the likes of Espen and Matteo Monero.

Now returning, “Sangria” is a typically deep affair that bristles with rapid-fire percussive hats and deep bass before a sumptuous grooved chord adds head-shaking energy. Building with ease, an almost imperceptible inclusion of additional production elements across the near 7-minute piece, has created a hypnotic and vibrant track. Also included, a stripped back “Dub Mix” provides an even deeper affair, revelling in cavernous bassline, 808 percussion and muted melodic phrasing.

Nicholas Van Orton needs little introduction to the dance music cognoscenti. An artist with over 15 years experience of the underground industry, Van Orton has risen through the ranks of the Argentinian production fraternity. DJ performances across the cosmopolitan Buenos Aries capital have kept him engaged with a faithful and adoring fan base, while production work has seen him reach some 600 credits with a raft of music signed to Perfecto Records, Superordinate Music and over 250 appearances on the Balkan Connection family of labels. Moreover, a double century of those have featured on the South America variant which has thrived under his stewardship.

A single remix of Munbraze’s “Peractorum” in October 2017 represents Nicholas Van Orton's debut outing for Suffused Music as he returns once again to the label to take on DP-6 with suitable aplomb. Using the deep house credentials of the original to maximum effect, a huge offbeat percussive pattern combines with rich rolling groove to create a subtle new variation of “Sangria” that revels in a dynamic new dancefloor urgency. Using the original components to impressive effect, a new open-filtered repetitive note adds energy to the jam-packed groove, while a host of new production material and subtle melodic flourishes creates a masterclass of production prowess from the Nicholas Van Orton production studio.

Ivan Nikusev - Obelisk EP incl. Ioan Gamboa, Vakabular [SMD238]

Welcoming a new artist to the roster, Suffused Music shines a spotlight on Macedonian, Ivan Nikusev, an artist who has appeared on some of the finest underground imprints with his classic progressive house sound. 

With his work featured on Perfecto, Mistique Music and John 00 Fleming’s JOOF and supported by the likes of Paul Oakenfold, Hernan Cattaneo and Fleming himself, Nikusev has created a body of work that finds him firmly at the industry’s top table. Moreover, as the artist responsible for founding OLD SQL, one of the leading underground labels, Nikusev has created a blue-chip vehicle for a century of his own production credits plus an artist roster that reads like the ‘Who’s Who’ of underground dance over the past 8 years. Now debuting on Suffused Music, “Obelisk” immediately hits the listener with its chest-thumping kick and off-beat percussion. Adding a bass that locks tightly to the rhythmic section, a glorious array of pads and textures filter into sonic range in perfect harmony. Building effortlessly, a glorious array of arpeggios supply dynamism into the breakdown before lifting the energy into the third movement with a flair and brio that is characteristic of Nikusev’s work.

Spanish born but now firmly ensconced in his adopted Berlin home, Ioan Gamboa has made a sizeable impression operating out of his studio in the German capital. Previously working under a number of aliases, his debut under the Ioan Gamboa moniker saw him release the “Spiral / Hope” EP on Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat in May 2011 before going on to feature on Cid Inc’s Replug, Henry Saiz’s Natura Sonoris and his own Madberlin imprint. Some 50 production credits for Particles tells a further story of the Spaniard’s success. Another Suffused Music debutant, the Ioan Gamboa remix takes “Obelisk” on a bouncing bassline voyage with a shuffling percussive hats and heavy beat adding dynamism. Exploding into life at the mid-point, a searing lead cuts through the mix like an acetylene torch, while a glittering arpeggio at the breakdown resonates with Nikusev’s original before a softer reprise provides the perfect antidote for the closing movement.

A successful DJ in his home in Ko Pha-ngan off the Gulf of Thailand, Vakabular’s production career has seen over a century of production credits find favour with Stan Kolev and Matan Caspi’s Outta Limits, Nikusev’s OLD SQL and his own Hollystone Records, plus a plethora of other imprints. A regular on Suffused Music over 2018, February’s “Quarantine” EP marked a strong debut while October’s “Endless” continued with a striking triptych. A pair of remixes for Dimuth K and Rick Pier O’Neil is now followed by a third as Vakabular immediately takes on the themes of “Obelisk” by recreating the central “Blade Runner” arpeggio as a dynamic and rolling bassline that serves as a foundation for a shimmering array of white-noise effects as incidental motifs. Appearing at a higher octave, the central arpeggio makes its play again at the mid-point to create a strong tie to Nikusev’s original. Vakabular’s skill is to create a new and vibrant take on the track original.

Futur-E - Hydra EP [SMD237]

Hailing from Eleusis, site of the “Eleusinian Mysteries”, home to the most famous secret religious rites of ancient Greece, Stavros Karavasilis has been involved in electronic music for a number of years. Under his Futur-E soubriquet the Greek producer returns to Suffused Music with his twin-track “Hydra EP”.

With a background in studying music theory, keyboard and harmonium, Karavasilis’ first foray into electronic music saw him work alongside DJ M92 under the Midnight Pulse pseudonym. Gradually finding his own musical path under various alter-egos until 2007, 2008 saw the birth of his Futur-E moniker with a debut release on Future Lovers in April 2011 and the “Anatomy” EP. Some 200 production credits later and the Futur-E name has found itself writ large across the underground dance scene with a potent blend of techno, progressive and tech house releases to his name.

Work for Traum, Manual Music and the globally renowned Tulipa Recordings has found Futur-E at the vanguard of the melodic techno sound that has become so prominent in the current dance music scene. Indeed, it is with the latter, that Futur-E has had a string of impressive releases including 2017’s “Cosmos” and “Chromosome” EPs.

August 2015 marked the Futur-E debut for Suffused Music with a standout remix of Oovation. Now returning with a debut original EP, the title track is a carefully constructed gem that delights with its angular rhythmic framework and cavernous bass pattern. Building in seamless fashion, rapid-fire percussion and carefully placed melodic motifs provide the basis for an automated vocal phrase to lament the over-population of earth and a solution to the problem from “Hydra, a new artificial intelligence character”. With a distinct science-fiction flavor to proceedings the introduction of a slightly unnerving arpeggio phrase creates the perfect narrative for the “Hydra” story.

Similarly, “Electrician” contains the Futur-E sonic hallmarks as a beautifully shimmering offering revels in a collage of melodies and intelligently placed motifs. A rich bass groove adds substance and delayed plucks add a subtle incongruity as they build in intensity to create a truly unique flavor post-breakdown. Backed by a framework of rolling groove and head-shaking rhythmic flow, the result is an innovative and original work.

Rising from the deep with a power and purpose, Futur-E is out to take on the world with “Hydra”.

Fernando Olaya - Gravity EP incl. Ejaz Ahamed, Placebo Efx, Momento De Baile [SMD236]

Originally part of a three-track EP December 2017, Fernando Olaya’s “Gravity” showcased a growing talent. Now returning to the title track, a trio of new remixes provide a new spin on the Colombian’s work.

A successful DJ with residencies across the Middle East at Trilogy and Pacha Ibiza Dubai, Ejaz Ahamed’s credentials are in little doubt. Plying alongside such iconic names as John Digweed, Sasha an Adam Beyer, Ahamed’s career behind the decks has been followed by burgeoning production work. Making his debut for PHW Elements in March 2017, Ahamed has gone on to feature for Kontact, Particles and the Visceral compilation series. Making his Suffused Music debut, the Ejaz Ahamed remix retains the percussive flair of “Gravity” while adding a host of new production material including a running bassline with its roots firmly in Olaya’s original. Simultaneously, a new rhythmic arpeggio and rich synth lines combine seamlessly with original components in an exciting new approach.

Los Angeles act, Placebo eFx are 2018 newcomers to the underground dance scene. Describing themselves under the broad banner of “Progressive/Melodic Techno duo”, they quickly found themselves allied to the Krafted Underground imprint. A trio of releases have thus hit the label: September 2018’s twin-track “And Then” was followed by November’s “Lo-Fi” and the track “Are We” featured on December’s “Deep Tech Los Angeles, Vol. 3, Pt. 1” album. Making their Suffused Music debut, Placebo eFx immediately hit their stride with a pounding beat and intricate rhythm before a complex bass pattern provides subtle variation. Building effortlessly, a smooth melodic lead comes into play at the mid-point to add depth and interest. Rising and falling throughout the second half, combined with a delayed and effected vocal component, the Placebo eFx is an innovative new interpretation of “Gravity”.

Momento de Baile is the final artist to take up the remix mantle. Another 2018 debutant to the underground music fraternity, the Colombian artist with a raison d’être to make “serious music for funny people”, has found a home on Suffused Music after an initial appearance on “Initializing, vol. 19” in August with “Simple”, followed by a full release of the track alongside “Driving to Disco” and “Glüwein” in October. Now the Medellin resident returns to the label with an outstanding reworking of “Gravity” that makes full use of the percussive components to create a new Latin-infused cadence and strong beat. Backed by a intelligent new groove that combines the core themes of the original while layering a swathe of new melodies and phrases, a multi-textured sound is created rooted in the sonic themes found in Olaya’s work. Reaching a stripped back breakdown, an intermittent pitched vocal cut adds greater depth before a second half erupts with a full complement of dancefloor rhythms and melodic effervescence.

Initializing, Vol. 21 [SMDVA030]

Hitting the ground running at the start of the New Year, Suffused Music celebrates 2019 by continuing the evergreen “Initializing” series. Now in its 21st incarnation, a quintet of tracks showcases a breadth of talent.

Opening proceedings, Belarusian artist, Ivanshee continues his assault on the underground progressive house scene with “Unicorn”. With over a triple century of production credits to his name, a bouncing bassline immediately creates a strong rhythmic foundation with heavy beat and ticking percussive prowess. Building throughout, the track erupts post-breakdown with wonderful bass motif that rises and falls in open-filtered fashion while shimmering melodic phrases and vocal cuts add intrigue.

Fresh from an appearance on Quivver’s groundbreaking “Rekonstruct”, Indonesian star, Lily Pita, continues to carve a sizeable reputation for herself. A regular on the likes of BeatFreak Recordings, Soundteller and Bedrock, Pita’s debut for Suffused Music finds “Alaya” characterized by a rich and enigmatic bass motif and metronomic rhythmic pattern that form the basis for an ever-growing collage of melody to emerge over the 9-minute track. Immaculately crafted throughout its different phases, the denouement sees a filtered motif take centre-stage in perfect harmony with the low-end foundations.

An artist with a rich musical history, multiple releases and a full-length album to his name, Berlin born, B Selekt reflected a move to a deeper sound with a name change. Following up on 2016’s “Samt” for Suffused Music, “030 Deep” is a smoldering track that is as dark and cavernous as its name might suggest. A huge low-end presence will make bass cones melt while a rapid-fire percussive groove creates dancefloor presence. Pausing for breath with a stepped chord progression at the breakdown, rhythm and bass dominate once again in the third movement to maximum effect.

A 2017 newcomer to the underground dance scene, Ge Bruny has made an immediate mark with impressive releases on Flemcy, Dear Deer and Superordinate. A love of “harmonies and inspiring melodies”, a debut for Suffused Music does not disappoint. “Otherwise” is chock-full of flowing melodic lines and sparkling arpeggios that entwine together in perfect harmony before reaching a zenith in the second half. Backed by rolling groove and deep kick, the result is an impressive debut.

Newcomers Echo Daft & Shanil Alox combine forces for their debut release. Both successful in their own rights throughout 2018, work signed for the likes of BQ Recordings and Electronic Tree has shone a light on their individual work. “Third Power” is thus an innovative track that showcases a delay-laden lead motif that pitches in incongruous fashion throughout the 8-minute piece, building to a rousing crescendo throughout the second and third movements. Mario Puccio - Welcome to Utopia EP incl. Ewan Rill, Micah Paul Lukasewich [SMD235]

A century of production credits has found Mario Puccio at the vanguard of underground progressive house. An accomplished musician, an impressive DJ career has seen performances in Los Angeles, London and Budapest while production work has seen him sign his music to SexOnWax and Nick Warren’s The Soundgarden. A clutch of releases on Suffused Music now sees a swathe of melodic textures and fast-paced arpeggio sequences combine to create “Welcome to Utopia”. Strong beat and clever counterpoint motifs add to the track with the resulting innovative offering enhanced by a searing vibrato lead.

A prolific artist with some 1,500 production credits to his name across almost 100 different labels, Ewan Rill is a modern production whirlwind. 200 of those can be found on Balkan Connection while Rill has also been a regular on the likes of Spring Tube, Stellar Fountain and Clinique Recordings. A renowned DJ, performances across the globe have seen the St. Petersburg based artist perform across his native Russia, sharing the stage with a DJ elite that includes the likes of Paul Van Dyk, Dave Seaman and Jody Wisternoff. A regular on Suffused Music since his 2013 debut, Ewan Rill returns with a smooth remix that is fuelled by ticking percussive groove and metronomic bassline pattern. An intelligent use of Puccio’s components sees richly textured pad modulate gently across proceedings. The arpeggio sequence so central to the original makes its presence felt at the mid-point breakdown before the deep, multi-layered textures and a new stepped arpeggio sequence thrill in a glorious third movement.

Micah Paul Lukasewich is another artist requiring little in the way of introduction. An artist with an innate sense of rhythm and a wonderful ability to create filmic soundscapes and multi-dimensional tracks, Lukasewich’s early work saw him feature on Global Underground and as a resident artist on the hybridized.org website alongside Way Out West and Hybrid. A century of production credits has seen Micah’s music featured on the likes of Proton Music, Lost Language and Chris Fortier’s Fade Records and a September 2018 remix of Dimuth K marked an impressive debut for Suffused Music. Now returning, the Micah Paul Lukasewich remix is a glorious representation of the Canadian artist’s musical prowess. An intricately sculpted rhythmic section is accompanied by a strong kick to create an immaculate groove that lays the foundation for an array of musical components to fall neatly into place. Intelligent use of Puccio’s original components, then leads to a beautiful symphonic soundscape that waxes and wanes in sonic beauty before developing into something special post-breakdown. Reminiscent of early Jean-Michel Jarre, a bouncing new groove evolves, combining bass and delayed motif that extends Puccio’s work in scintillating new direction.

Nick Varon - Over & Out EP incl. EANP, Danny Lloyd, Nicolas Rada [SMD234]

An artist of global repute, Nick Varon’s celebrated DJ career has seen him at the forefront of the underground dance scene. Able to weave a magical spell with his expertly crafted sets, he has been lauded by the likes of Nick Warren and Sharam while regularly supporting fellow countryman, Hernan Cattaneo across the globe. A similarly impressive production career has seen Varon a regular on Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music with 2012’s “Shibuya” and 2017’s “Sky Ladder” making strong impressions. “Over & Out” is a typically strong progressive offering as heavy rolling beat and light ticking percussion form a foundation for textured pads to supply depth and emotion while a plucked motif adds substance and interest to the powerful groove.

Successful artists in their own rights. Ezequiel Anile and Nicolas Petracca have forged an impressive collaborative relationship under their EANP contraction. Working together since 2014, their inimitable style has seen a seamless blend of techno, progressive and deep house result in an array of memorable sets with the likes of Nick Warren and Nick Muir. Standing alongside, impressive production credentials have given the duo a clutch of high-profile original releases for the likes of Movement, Mirabilis and Paul Hazendonk’s MNL. EANP’s Suffused Music debut is thus an intelligent reworking of Varon’s original as a vocal cut repeats the track title while a hypnotic four/four beat and percussive groove lay the foundations for a chorus of pads and white noise to create a wonderful crescendo at the mid-point. A driving anthemic third movement full of bass and melodic prowess provides real intent.

Nicolas Rada is a name that requires little introduction. Regular collaborations with Nick Warren have seen the duo remix Eelke Kleijn’s “8 Bit Era” before joining forces for the four-track “Land of Dreams” on Warren’s own The Soundgarden imprint in June 2018. Some 300 production credits have seen Rada as a regular on the Balkan Connection label family and supported by a global elite; DJ performances across his Buenos Aries hometown and a Mexican tour with fellow countryman, Nicholas Van Orton, has seen his following swell. Creating a wonderfully charismatic reworking of “Over & Out”, a delicate beat and swirling arpeggio form a sumptuous opening that gradually evolves over its eight-minute voyage. Building gently, subtle vocal phrasing is introduced while clever use of Varon’s remix parts create an innovative new interpretation that blossoms through the breakdown and third movement.

Italian artist, Danny Lloyd, has been at the forefront of the progressive house genre for a number of years. An artist with a rich and varied production history, over a century of credits tell their own success story with music signed to Balkan Connection and Particles. Lloyd’s collaboration with Andrea Cassino under their Nocturna pseudonym has also provided considerable success on Proton Music. Returning to Suffused Music the Danny Lloyd remix takes “Over & Out” in an exciting new melodic direction as a swathe of additional production material, melded with Varon’s components, has created an original interpretation that drives relentlessly forward with dynamic bass groove and intricate percussive rhythms. A new chord progression adds further intrigue as does a searing breakdown full of melodic prowess.

Rick Pier O'Neil - Onix Beat EP incl. Morttagua, Vakabular, Exoplanet [SMD233]

Originally part of Suffused Music’s 65th release in November 2014, the “Shimmer of Lights” EP showcased Rick Pier O’Neil’s mature production sound. The diptych, “Onix Beat”, was a highlight of the EP, Part 1 reprised in all its driving glory, here with a trio of remixes.

Head honcho of the successful Timeless Moment imprint, award-winning DJ and producer, Morttagua, has carved out a sizeable reputation for himself through his own impressive production credentials. A number 1 in the Beatport Progressive House chart with the “Sith Planets” EP and support from the cream of the DJ community including Sasha, Dubfire and Pete Tong on his BBC radio 1 show, the Brazilian has featured on a host of high-profile labels including Black Hole, Armada and Outta Limits. Debuting on Suffused Music, the Morttagua remix takes “Onix Beat” on a blissful melodic voyage with eerie pads and rippling arpeggio providing the perfect foil for heavy beat and fast-paced bassline groove. Building impressively, a hypnotic stab makes its presence felt alongside a swathe of additional production material that cleverly retains the soul of O’Neil’s original.

Renowned DJ and producer, Vakabular, is a regular across the clubs of his Koh Pha-ngan home. An island famous for its party atmosphere and beach-club culture, the Thai artist has found himself well-respected by the packed venue audiences that come to witness his silky sets. A production career that began with the tech house “Wait EP” for Randomatic Records in October 2014, has since seen Vakabular weave his sonic magic on high-calibre labels that include Krafted, Outta Limits and his own Hollystone Records. February’s “Quarantine” and October 2018’s “Endless” EPs marked a successful year on Suffused Music as Vakabular now returns with a strong reworking of Rick Pier O’Neil. Using the same driving energy of the original, a reimagining of the bassline provides the platform for a series of melodic phrases and chord progressions to play off each other in coruscating fashion. Continuity is supplied via a simple lead motif, repeated pre and post-breakdown, while a fizzing percussive rhythm section is a dynamic addition.

Little by way of introduction is needed for production legend, Exoplanet, with the Dutch artist responsible for a host of innovative and highly-skilled productions, not least for the Proton Music and Particles imprints that have borne witness to well over a century of production credits. Exoplanet’s remix of “Onix Beat” is included here to show of the Dutchman’s exquisite melodies and intricately programmed percussion. The resultant remix bristles with a vibrant energy and rhythmic innovation rarely found in modern dance music.

Eze Ramirez - 3 De Enero EP [SMD232]

An artist inspired by the iconic sounds of Depeche Mode and Radiohead, Eze Ramirez returns to Suffused Music for their 232nd release with “3 De Enero”.

From the sprawling, cosmopolitan capital, Ezequiel Ramirez has carved out a sizeable niche for himself from his Buenos Aries studio. Testament to this success, over a century of production credits can be found next to the Eze Ramirez name as he continues to court success with each passing release. A regular in the Beatport genre charts for progressive house and techno, Ramirez weaves a magical aural tapestry with his unique and distinctive sound.

3rd Avenue, Forward Music and Crossfade Sounds have regularly featured the young Argentine’s music with the Balkan Connection family of labels also proving to be a successful home, not least in compatriot Nicholas Van Orton’s “South American” variant. Moreover, October 2018 saw the release of the highly anticipated three-track “G-Stereo” debut on Greek behemoth, Movement Recordings.

With over five years experience in the underground dance scene, Ramirez has found his music supported by a global DJ elite that includes the likes of Nick Warren, Guy Mantzur and Dave Seaman, while regularly finding his way into the sets and charts iconic fellow countryman, Hernan Cattaneo. Now following up on a remix of Spacebeat’s “Winter Phase” in March 2015, Eze Ramirez returns to Suffused Music with a brand-new original offering.

Characterised by flowing pads and richly textured soundscape, “3 De Enero” entices with its gently lilting arpeggio that filters into sonic range atop deep kick and shuffling percussive hi-hats. Evolving with ease over its near eight-minute voyage, intelligently effected vocal cuts provide a hint of tribal magic while a gated vocal synth provides further interest post-breakdown.

A more energised “Club Mix” is also included. Displaying the same fundamental characteristics as its stablemate, the arpeggio sequence so pivotal to the original bursts into life with extended range, to create a new head-shaking groove. Reaching its zenith at the mid-point breakdown with a chorus of pulsating pads and white noise, the third movement sees a renewal of melodic and rhythmic interplay to create an impressive new variation.

Momento de Baile - Simple EP [SMD231]

As Suffused Music celebrates its 231st release, a brand-new artist is welcomed into the fold as Momento de Baile provides a musical triptych in the shape of his “Simple” EP.

From the historic city of Medellin, famous for its universities, commerce and ever-growing festivals, Momento de Baile has created a unique and distinctive sound. A debut appearance on the “Initializing, Vol. 19” compilation in August 2017 saw the Colombian showcase his talents with the opening “Simple” track on the release.

Now returning to Suffused Music, “Simple” receives a full release accompanied by two further tracks that exemplify the modern underground progressive house sound. With its distinctive Georgio Moroder inspired bassline, the title track is reprised here in all its driving, Donna Summer, disco-tinged glory, redolent in pulsating white-noise effects and glittering octave-ranged arpeggio.

“Driving to Disco” picks up the baton with its similar driving beat and intelligent arpeggio work. Continuing apace over the course of its near eight-minute duration, a glorious bass groove lays the foundations for off-beat percussion to add texture and weight while clever use of a vocal cut makes its presence felt in gated, pulsing fashion. Exploding into the third movement in hypnotic fashion, the track is sure to appeal to dance floors across South America and beyond.

The final offering sees “Glüwein” characterised by rapid-fire bassline dominance that evolves in open-filtered splendour while a counterpoint arpeggio provides the perfect melodic accompaniment. A driving beat with sporadic reverb-drenched effects and perfectly placed drum fills, adds to the sonic evolution with a new melodic motif introduced at the mid-way point. Escalating impressively across its eight-minute timeframe, the track is an expertly crafted affair that is the very epitome of mesmerising tension, constantly evolving and progressing through expertly placed layers of percussion and production technique.

GBrown - Another Perspective EP incl. Ewan Rill, Monojoke [SMD230]

Part of the “Open” triptych, “Another Perspective” saw New Orleans based artist, GBrown, open his Suffused Music account with a dark, tech-infused offering that created an unnerving feel with its pitched loquacious sample. Originally released in August 2016, the original is now reprised with remixes from Russian and Polish veterans.

Siberian born, Ewan Rill, is as prolific as he is talented. With 1,500 production credits to his name spread across some 70 record labels, the Russian artist has hit upon a consistent formula for success since an early debut on Balkan Connection in July 2011. A further double century of credits can be found on the Serbian imprint with a host of additional tracks for the likes of Clinique Recordings, Stellar Fountain and Spring Tube Limited. Now operating out of his St. Petersburg home, Rill is a regular across the clubs of his hometown with performances alongside Jerome Isma-Ae, Ronski Speed and Sander Van Doorn. 

A regular on Suffused Music with a range of original remix material, we are delighted to welcome back an old friend as he remixes “Another Perspective”. With a typically rich and dynamic offering, a running bassline makes its presence felt throughout the track, opening up in the third movement. Its roots in GBrown’s work, a strong beat and percussive cadence add extra layers of intrigue as the sample so central to the original also makes its presence felt throughout.

An iconic name in the progressive house and breaks genre, Krakow based artist, Monojoke, has shaped the underground sound with his dynamic work. A debut for FeralCode Records in January 2007 opened the door on a huge array of material finding its way on to a selection of some of the finest modern digital imprints. Over a decade of experience and production know-how has seen Monojoke become a regular on Spring Tube, Particles and Electronic Tree, the latter seeing a collaborative partnership with fellow countryman and label boss, Tuxedo (under the Fluente moniker) and releases on Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat. Supported by a raft of A-list DJs including John Digweed, Nick Warren and Guy J, Monojoke has been a regular contributor to Suffused Music since a remix of Deng & Slavak in early 2014. 

Returning after a remix of Ewan Rill in July 2017, Monojoke remixes “Another Perspective” with typical aplomb. Taking the same dark, tech-house approach as the original, Monojoke adds an array of additional rhythmic layers that crunch, fizz and shake their way across the track. The vocal sample central to the original makes its presence felt throughout, waxing and waning in delayed patterns as a beautiful melodic chord progression creates a wonderful juxtaposition at the mid-point, reprised again in the final stages as an antidote to the driving rhythmic prowess.

Vakabular - Endless EP [SMD229]

Returning to Suffused Music for the label’s 229th release, Vakabular creates an “Endless” flow of music with three tracks of the highest quality.

Home to the “Full Moon Party” on Thailand’s south east coast, Vakabular has made a name for himself from his Koh Pha-ngan island home. With a renowned party culture running across the island’s beaches, Vakabular has regularly performed in front of packed club audiences at events including “Waterfall” and 360 Rooftop”, seeing his music consistently met with club approval. Curator of the successful “Hollystone Podcast Series” and Hollystone Records, the Thai producer has continually impressed with over a century of production credits to his name.

A regular on the likes of Krafted Records and Outta Limits, the six-track, “Floor Damage” EP for the Stan Kolev and Matan Caspi owned imprint was a worthy addition to the label. Making his debut for Suffused Music in February 2018, the twin-track “Quarantine” EP marked an impressive debut, while a remix of Dimuth K in September 2018 saw Vakabular produce an innovative interpretation of “Souq”.

As Vakabular returns to Suffused Music the triptych title track sees “Endless” characterised by driving techno beat and metronomic bassline. Building effortlessly, the addition of white-noise and pitched analogue effects paves the way for a vocal sample to find its way into the mix at the mid-point, before the pace picks up once again in the third movement. Rhythm and melody thus combine to create a dynamic dancefloor stormer.

Keeping the same energy, derived from chest-thumping kick and running bassline, “Star Gate” reveals a chorus of delay-panned synth effects and mesmeric arpeggio. Changing character at the mid-point a TB-303 style line makes a play across the mid-range, building to a satisfying denouement before returning to earlier rhythm and melody combination in the track’s second half.

The final track sees a subtle shift in character as a bouncing groove is found in “Desire” via intelligently placed bassline and percussive combination. A smooth melodic sequence is gradually revealed and supplies an absorbing freeform pattern that coruscates across the mid-range in fluid analogue phrasing. Full of clever pitched tape-delays, the track waxes and wanes in impressive fashion.

A new three-track EP from the mind of Vakabular sees a continued, “Endless” flow of success.

Matteo Monero - Mind Control EP [SMD228]

Heading into the autumn months, Suffused Music returns to Italy. Based on the corner of Lake Garda in the northern town of Rovereto, Matteo Monero is a producer with a wealth of experience. With over a decade’s familiarity in the underground dance music scene and over a triple-century of production credits to his name, Monero can boast work signed to a host of blue-chip imprints since a debut for BIT Records in April 2007. 

Indeed, Superordinate Music, Balkan Connection and ICONYC have been regular hosts of the Matteo Monero sound with October 2016’s “Battle 2” EP, June 2018’s “Anunnaki” and “Strange Habits” for the latter hitting the headlines in August. His music supported by the likes of Armin Van Buuren, Lee Burridge and Hernan Cattaneo, Monero’s relationship with Suffused Music has seen a clutch of impressive releases, centred around the original track, “Beyond the Inner Journey” and remixes of Kaan Koray, JJ grant and DP-6.

Now returning with original new music, the opening track is framed by a techno rhythm and bustling sixteenth shakers. Evolving delicately, a metronomic bassline juxtaposes perfectly against a rippling arpeggio that mesmerises in the opening movement of “Cosmic Dispersion” as a filter opens up to create intensity. An additional motif adds depth while a stripped back breakdown full of white-noise effects and piercing synth provide a new texture. As all elements combine in the third movement, the result is a multi-faceted affair full of craft and guile.

The title track continues the rich melodic make-up of its predecessor as a repetitive motif filters into sonic range. A driving percussion and pounding beat supply strong dancefloor character with a combination of open and closed hi-hats, while a smooth arpeggio locks tightly to the groove. A glissando lead finds its place at the mid-point as the breakdown provides an interlude that shifts the musical narrative briefly with its new melodic direction. Hitting its stride once again in the third movement with a full complement of drums and synths, “Mind Control” is an exciting hypnotic track.
